This is the first floodlight that Nest has put out, and it’s been a long time coming. Considering Ring has had one out for quite a few years already. Nest says that they wanted to integrate the smarts in their Nest Cam with a more helpful floodlight camera. That would be one that would turn on when activity is detected, and be able to install very easily. And able to replace the existing exterior light fixture.
It’s completely controlled through the Google Home app
Like most newer Nest Cams, the Nest Cam with Floodlight is going to be completely controlled through the Google Home app. So you won’t need to use another app for this camera. It’ll be the Google Home app which you likely already use for other smart home products in your home. The Nest Cam with Floodlight has other great Nest Cam features, and includes on-device processing. This means that more features will be available right out of the box. Including things that used to require a subscription. Like the Nest Cam Wired, it will also continue recording even if you lose WiFi. And it’ll upload to the Google Home app once connectivity returns. Nest does also allow you to set up routines. The Nest Cam with Floodlight is able to work with your Nest speakers and displays, so that you can control the lights with your voice. You can also set up a routine to turn hte floodlight on at a specific time, maybe at 8PM when you get home from work. But you can also use your voice to turn it on. Just say “turn on backyard light”.
