The competition between Microsoft and Google has reached a new level. Both companies are trying to stoke interest in their own office platforms. While Microsoft Office is older than Google Workspace, Google seems to be serious about challenging its old rival. That’s why the company has brought an offline editing feature to its Workspace. As per Google’s announcement, users will be able to edit Microsoft Office files within the Workspace without an Internet connection. “At times when your device is offline, you’re now able to edit, comment, and collaborate on Office files using Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Any changes made to files while offline will then sync to Drive once you are connected again,” Google noted. Also, Google says, “The feature brings the collaboration benefits of Google Workspace to Microsoft Office files.”
Google Workspace is directly competing with Microsoft 365
It was first in 2019 that Google announced a new ability to work with Microsoft Office files in Google Docs and other similar platforms. In recent months, Google has also tried a lot to bring a bunch of new, cool features to the Workspace family. The goal is to steal users away from Microsoft Office. Both platforms have their own benefits. Microsoft Office offers unique integration with Windows and other Office Suite apps. On the other hand, Google offers a seamless experience for real-time collaboration and hybrid working. However, the data obtained by TechRadar proves that Microsoft Office is still leading the market. As per the data, 58% of companies choose Microsoft 365, and just 15% opt for Google Workspace. Also, Google’s cloud services could generate $5 billion in revenue in Q1 2022. In the same time frame, Microsoft’s productivity segment could bring $15 billion to the company. This is why Google is heavily focused on developing its Workspace apps. A $10 billion gap is too big to ignore.
